National Cancer Data Base - Data Dictionary PUF 2015

Summary of 2013 PUF User File Changes as of 1/5/2016

The following changes have been made for the 2013 PUF:

PUF data files now include cases diagnosed in 2004-2013. Patients diagnosed in 1998-2003 are not included because many crucial data items were not collected prior to 2004, and data before this time period have been misinterpreted in some published papers.

PUF applicants are now able to choose from four different age groups in the application: Pediatric (0-17), pediatric/young adult (0-39), adult (18-90+), and all ages (0-90+).

Scope of Regional Lymph Node Surgery 2012
A new variable has been added for an expanded version of the Scope of the Regional Lymph Node, available for diagnosis years 2012 and 2013 only. For the definition and labels for this new item, please review the item (NAACCR Item #1292) in the FORDS Manual: https://www.facs.org/quality-programs/cancer/ncdb/registrymanuals/cocman....

For further explanation of why this item has recently become available for 2012 and 2013 only, please visit this page: https://www.facs.org/~/media/files/quality%20programs/cancer/ncdb/scope%....

The original Scope of the Regional Lymph Node item is still available; no changes have been made this this item.

Changes to existing variables

Size of Tumor (TUMOR_SIZE)
Previously, this item combined the information collected as Tumor Size (NAACCR Item #780) prior to 2004 with the site-specific content of CS Tumor Size (NAACCR Item #2800) for cases diagnosed in 2004 and later. This variable now only contains data for cases collected using CS Tumor Size. Please refer to the site and histology-specific pages of the current CS manual, which can be accessed here: https://cancerstaging.org/cstage/schema/Pages/version0205.aspx. Additionally, the item has been renamed “CS Tumor Size” and moved to a new category: Collaborative Stage Data Collection System under Stage of Disease. The updated entry for this item can be found here: http://ncdbpuf.facs.org/?q=content/ncdb-tumor-size.

PUF Vital Status (PUF_VITAL_STATUS)
This item is now available for cases diagnosed through 2012.

Last Contact or Death, Months from Dx (DX_LASTCONTACT_DEATH_MONTHS)
This item is now available for cases diagnosed through 2012.

Ninety Day Mortality (PUF_90_DAY_MORT_CD)
This item is now available for cases diagnosed through 2012.

Thirty Day Mortality (PUF_30_DAY_MORT_CD)
This item is now available for cases diagnosed through 2012.

Facility Type (FACILITY_TYPE_CD)
A new category has been added for Integrated Network Cancer Programs (INCP). These facilities were previously included in the Comprehensive Community Cancer Program category, but now have their own category. Please see the Facility Type definition in the data dictionary for the updated codes and labels.

Facility Type will be suppressed for all cases aged 0-39 for de-identification purposes. Previously, this item was suppressed for cases aged 0-18, but the age was increased with the knowledge that patients older than 18 may visit pediatric hospitals.

Facility Location (FACILITY_LOCATION_CD)
Facility Location will be suppressed for all cases aged 0-39 for de-identification purposes. Previously, this item was suppressed for cases aged 0-18, but the age was increased with the knowledge that patients older than 18 may visit pediatric hospitals.

Chemotherapy (RX_SUMM_CHEMO), Chemotherapy at This Facility (RX_HOSP_CHEMO), Immunotherapy (RX_SUMM_IMMUNOTHERAPY), Immunotherapy at This Facility (RX_HOSP_IMMUNOTHERAPY)
Six drugs previously classified as Chemotherapy are now classified as BRM/Immunotherapy. This change in classification is effective only for cases diagnosed in January 1st, 2013 and forward. While the NCDB does not provide drug-specific data, changes in case counts may be observed for these four variables for cases diagnosed in 2013 due to the change in classification. The drugs are: Alemtuzumab/Campath, Bvacizumab/Avastin, Rituximab, Trastuzumab/Herceptin, Pertuzumab/Perjeta, and Cetuxumab/Erbitux.
