PUF Data Dictionary Items

The CoC/NCDB PUF Data Dictionary Items

The information provided in this on-line PUF Data Dictionary should be used by investigators using the NCDB PUF.  This document represents the set of items included in the 2014 PUF releases in Fall 2016 and Winter 2017.  The CoC reserves the right to modify or update this on-line resource as or when the need arises.
Each data item in the on-line PUF Data Dictionary is documented using the following elements:

Data Dictionary Category
Each item is categorized into one of six groups: Administrative, Patient Characteristics, Cancer Identification, Stage of Disease, Treatment – First Course, and Outcomes.

Information about the Collaborative Stage (CS) system can be accessed by hovering over the Stage of Disease Link in the Data Items Menu on the left-hand side of this page. The Getting Started Document (http://ncdbpuf.facs.org/node/274) also has information about this staging system. Labels and definitions for Version 2 of the CS Site-Specific Factors 1-25 are located on the CS website: https://cancerstaging.org/cstage. Data items such as ER/PR results, Gleason score, and HPV status are examples of site-specific factors.

PUF Data Item Name
Identifies the name applied to the data item in the distributed PUF file.

NAACCR Item #
The North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR) facilitates standards for data collection and transmission among and between hospital, state, regional and national cancer registries (Standards for Cancer Registries Volume II: Data Standards and Data Dictionary, see link on the Introduction page under “Registry Manuals”).  Each item in the PUF is either drawn directly from data reported from CoC-accredited cancer program registries, in which case the NAACCR Item # is provided for investigators to identify documentation related to this item in other coding manuals, or references that are commonly used across the cancer registry surveillance system in the United States and Canada.

In some cases no NAACCR item # is provided.  These items have been linked from other data sources available to the CoC/NCDB or have been derived by the NCDB from data provided from the reporting cancer registries.

Length
The total number of characters used by the item.

Allowable Values
The value(s) or range of values coded in the item.

Text
If the item is of character or string type, the content of the item is further described (e.g. Right Justified, Zero Filled).

Description
A working description of the item.

Registry Coding Instructions
A detailed account of the coding directives provided to cancer registrars

Analytic Note
On occasion, additional information is made available that may indicate where added information related to the item may be located, whether the item is only available in the PUF for certain diagnosis years, or if experience from previous analytic work with the item warrants special attention or possible consideration by investigators.

Codes/Definitions
The list of code and the code labels for the data item are provided.

The information provided in this on-line PUF Data Dictionary should be used by investigators who anticipate applying for access to the NCDB PUF.   Successful candidates will receive access to a PUF that will be issued by the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer (CoC) in Fall 2016.  This document represents the current set of items expected to be released.  The CoC reserves the right to modify or update this on-line resource as or when the need arises.
